Layers
Layers
We are born, pure and perfect.
As we grow, we start to add on layers to ourselves.
Layers of milestones reached and accomplishments made.
Layers of what we are told we should be, or should strive to achieve.
Layers of labels (good and bad) placed upon us by parents, teachers, coaches and pastors.
Layers of beliefs that we absorb.
Layers of false narratives our inner voices repeat in a loop about ourselves.
layers upon layers of different identities we have to assume at different times in our lives in different situations and circumstances.
Even layers of lenses through which we see the world around us!
It becomes hard to know just how deep all those layers have become, and how far beneath all those layers our true selves are buried
BUT THEN a beautiful thing starts to happen.
We reach an age (where I am now) where we start to feel the weight of all of these layers, we have been carrying around.
We start learning how to peel away the layers one by one to get back to who we truly are underneath. Decades of habits and coping mechanisms and identities we’ve had to adopt or assume over the years. With each layer we are able to shed we feel lighter and more at peace and more in tune with who we truly are and it’s a beautiful thing. We may even come to realize that we’re a beautiful thing. All those decades of layers shaped and formed, and reimagined who that person underneath was to become. As I peel away the layers, I have learned to love and appreciate each one for the lessons I have learned, the growth that has happened, and the fire through which I have been refined over and over again in my lifetime. It takes a lot of work, but if you’re patient with yourself, the road of discovery in removing all of these layers is truly a soul quenching experience. We come out of the other side with a priceless
and most precious gift
